Featured Snippet

A highlighted answer box pulled from a ranking page to the top of the SERP.

Overview

A featured snippet is a boxed answer Google extracts from a page and shows above the standard organic results, sometimes called position zero. It is a way to directly answer a query, drawn from a page that already ranks on the first page, and it can appear as a paragraph, list or table.

Winning a snippet can lift visibility and clicks, though it can also reduce clicks if the answer fully satisfies the searcher. Snippets are also a primary source that AI Overviews and assistants draw on, so they matter beyond classic search.

How to win one

You generally need to already rank on page one, then structure your content so Google can lift a clean answer.

  • Answer the question directly in 40 to 60 words
  • Use clear headings that mirror the query
  • Format lists and steps with proper markup
  • Put the concise answer near the top of the section

How REO Rank applies it

We identify queries where a snippet is present but winnable, then restructure the page with a tight, quotable answer block followed by supporting depth, which also improves eligibility for AI Overview citations.

Common questions

Straight answers on how this fits your marketing and build.

You almost always need to be on page one, but not necessarily at number one. Google often pulls the snippet from a result ranked anywhere in the top ten if it answers the query most cleanly.
