Content Concept

Pillar & Cluster

A content structure where a broad pillar page links to focused cluster pages that link back.

Overview

The pillar and cluster model organises content around a central pillar page that covers a broad topic at a high level, surrounded by cluster pages that each cover one narrow subtopic in depth. The pillar links out to every cluster page, and each cluster page links back to the pillar.

This creates a clear, machine-readable structure that tells search engines how your pages relate, concentrates internal linking around a subject, and gives readers an obvious path from the overview to the detail.

How it works

You pick a broad subject that matters to your business and build one comprehensive pillar page for it. You then identify the specific questions and subtopics people search for within that subject and give each its own cluster page. Internal links bind the group together in both directions.

  • Pillar page targets the broad head term
  • Cluster pages target specific long-tail queries
  • Bidirectional internal links define the topic structure

Why it matters

The structure is the single most practical way to build topical authority. It stops your pages from competing with each other, distributes link equity across a subject, and makes it easy for both readers and crawlers to understand what your site is genuinely expert in.

Common mistakes

Teams often build the pillar and forget the clusters, or create clusters that overlap so heavily they cannibalise each other. Another failure is treating the pillar as a shallow landing page rather than a genuinely useful, standalone resource.

Pillar & Cluster — questions

Straight answers on how this fits your marketing and build.

There is no fixed number. Build a cluster page for each distinct subtopic that has real search demand or answers a real question. Quality and non-overlap matter far more than count.
