A hosted commerce platform for building and running online stores without managing infrastructure.
Official siteShopify is a fully hosted (SaaS) e-commerce platform that lets businesses build, run and scale an online store without managing servers, hosting or security themselves. It handles the product catalogue, checkout, payments, hosting and a large app ecosystem, which makes it one of the fastest ways to launch a serious online store.
Because it is hosted, it is reliable and low-maintenance, but that convenience comes with constraints: you work within Shopify's structure, transaction fees apply unless you use Shopify Payments, and deep customisation means learning Liquid (its templating language) or Hydrogen for headless builds. For SEO it is capable but opinionated — URL structures and some technical elements are less flexible than a self-hosted platform.
Shopify provides the full commerce stack — storefront, checkout, payments and admin — as a managed service.
Shopify is the commerce foundation for retail clients — the alternative to a WooCommerce-on-WordPress build. It connects to GA4 and Google Tag Manager for measurement, to Google Merchant Center for Shopping ads, and its product data feeds Google Ads campaigns. On the SEO side its structure defines what technical work is even possible.
Strength: fast to launch, reliable, secure, and backed by a huge app and partner ecosystem. Limit: monthly fees plus transaction fees if you avoid Shopify Payments; SEO control is constrained (fixed URL patterns, limited robots/redirect control until recent improvements); and heavy customisation requires Liquid or a headless build. You trade flexibility for convenience.
For e-commerce clients on Shopify we handle technical SEO within its constraints — canonicalisation, clean collection/product structures, structured data and speed — and wire up GA4, GTM and Merchant Center for measurement and Shopping. Where a client needs more control we advise on headless (Hydrogen) versus staying on the standard theme.

Common questions
Straight answers on how this fits your marketing and build.
It is capable — fast hosting, HTTPS, mobile themes and clean product schema help. But it is opinionated: URL structures are fixed and some technical controls are limited, so SEO work happens within Shopify's guardrails.
